Lodging
When visiting Tuscany, consider the type of lodging that suits you best.
There are apartments with full accomodations, where you can prepare your own meals. With little effort, you can usually find someone local to cook for you, if you do not care to cook. An even better experience is to hire a guide to take you into the forest to forage for wild porcini mushrooms, asparagus or leafy vegetables during the season, or to hunt for chinghiale (wild boar) and other game. There’s nothing like cooking your own catch. A visit the local grocery store or outdoor market is always an adventure. Vendors will always be able to tell you how to prepare a meal, and what ingredients you need — and, you can figure it out, even if there is a language barrier.
Another lodging choice is an agriturismo. Agriturismi are very popular guest houses in the countryside. Typically, you can reserve a room at an agriturismo and have your meals in a common dining room with other guests. Meals are prepared by the proprietor or a chef, and there is usually a reasonable selection of local favorites on the menu. You can reserve a room in an agriturismo with no meals, two meals or three meals per day. Usually folks are out during the day, so they order two meals — breakfast and dinner.
Below are a couple of examples of lodging choices.
Cas’ Anita
Cas’ Anita is a country house with two separate apartments. The apartments can be rented individually, or the entire house can be rented. A cook, a housekeeper and all sorts of local “experiences,” from wine-tastings to truffle hunting can be arranged.

Agriturismo Podere Santa Maria, with its welcoming atmosphere, wonderful food and refreshing pool, is an example of a fine agriturismo.
